Anne Hathaway is Catwoman

Last week’s column included a section speculating about the various female stars vying for a role in the next Batman film. But, just hours after it was filed, Warner Bros made the shock announcement that it was Anne Hathaway who had won the role, although not as Bruce Wayne’s love interest, or the daughter of Ra’s Al Ghul as we thought, but as villain and occasional ally, Catwoman.

The last time Catwoman appeared onscreen was in 2004′s Catwoman, starring Halle Berry. The last the character appeared onscreen in a form that wasn’t totally shit, was when Michelle Pfeiffer played Selina Kyle in Tim Burton’s 1992 film, Batman Returns.

Sexism in the Cinema

First, a disclaimer. This article was written two years ago, so the references are not current.

However, the recent Andy Gray/Richard Keys sexism storm reminded me that it lurked somewhere on my hard drive, and that it would be timely to resurrect it.

I often leave the cinema wanting to kill people, but this weekend I was filled with rage before the film had even started.

Regular readers have probably realised that I’m not a particularly sensitive soul. I joke about things that shouldn’t really be joked about, tend to pop off at the mouth at the most inopportune times, and say stupid things just because I don’t think. However, one thing that’s really rubbing me up the wrong way at the moment is the way men are being portrayed in commercials.

Gervais did exactly what he was paid to do

Much play has been made of the job Ricky Gervais did of presenting at the Golden Globes earlier this week, with British and American commentators calling his gags ‘vulgar’ and ‘lazy’, with others describing his irreverent comments as ‘genius’ and ‘hilarious’. The truth – as always – falls somewhere between the two camps.

Significantly longer than 24hrs to wait for Jack Bauer movie

Those of you eagerly anticipating the movie version of 24 are going to have to wait a bit longer. 20th Century Fox has rejected the latest screenplay written by State of Play’s Billy Ray.

In fact, it might take even longer than we imagine.
